Duplication loss

For Lethe’s preliminary study, I wanted to explore the sense of loss. I found that there is a strong tendency to hold on to a moment. The need to make it permanent. But in the process of duplication there will always be a certain loss. I wanted to show that loss and make visible what it looks like to hold on to something in vain.

I used two analog photos I took in May 2020. These already contained some loss and alienation of the original moment due to the faulty development process and not pressing the shutter button properly. It is also much more difficult to capture a moment with an analog camera because there are many more factors involved. In the time you take one analog photo, you can take 10 with a smartphone.

In order to push it even further than the analogue nature of the pictures, I was going to make prints of the photos with a scanner. And continuously let this escalate further and further until the moment is almost unrecognizable. Eventually you see the moment slip away before your eyes. There is a clear loss again in trying repeatedly to hold on.
